State Coronavirus Updates
- First National Bank of Pennsylvania Joins ‘PA CARE Package’ Initiative: Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced that First National Bank of Pennsylvania, the largest subsidiary of F.N.B. Corporation (NYSE: FNB) and one of the first banks in the U.S. to establish a comprehensive COVID-19 financial relief program, has agreed to join the ‘PA CARE Package’ – Pennsylvania’s consumer relief initiative. By joining these efforts, FNB along with the Office of Attorney General will ensure Pennsylvania consumers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible for additional economic relief. - Wolf Administration Announces Second Round of State Funding for Pennsylvania Businesses: On behalf of Governor Tom Wolf, Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Dennis Davin announced that 160 companies in 43 counties have received $13.5 million in funding during the second round of the COVID-19 Working Capital Access Program (CWCA). Funds awarded under the program to date total more than $23 million awarded to a number of diverse businesses like restaurants, wellness centers, wineries and breweries, consulting firms, and salons and spas. - The Pa. Turnpike is seeing less traffic; it could cause big problems statewide: The drop in revenue poses serious challenges for the turnpike commission. Turnpike Commission CEO Mark Compton said the commission is cutting costs and scaling back repair projects. - Allegheny County
- Of the 1,224 cases in Allegheny County, 1,190 are confirmed cases and 34 are probable cases. Of the 1,224 cases, 169 cases are in healthcare workers. This reflects 14% of the COVID-19 cases in Allegheny County. Additionally, there are 213 past or present hospitalizations (no change).
- ALung Technologies Inc
- ALung Technologies Inc., a medical technology startup on the South Side, created its signature Hemolung more than 13 years ago. The Hemolung device has received federal approval for emergency use in the fight against COVID-19, and is currently in the midst of a pair of significant clinical trials in 36 hospitals in the U.S., including Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side, and doctors at the trial hospitals have begun using the Hemolung to treat patients who have been infected with the coronavirus that triggers COVID-19. The company currently makes eight to 10 machines per month, but is poised to increase that number.
Federal Coronavirus Updates
- Small Business Administration
- Less than an hour after the Small Business Administration started taking requests for another $310 billion in emergency aid for small businesses on Monday morning, its computer system for processing the loan applications crashed. It was a rocky start for the second round of funding through the Paycheck Protection Program, a stimulus measure that offers small companies a low-interest loan to cover their payroll and other costs. If borrowers comply with the program’s rules, the loans will be forgiven.
National Coronavirus Updates
- According to CNN, as of 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2020, there are 55,118 coronavirus-related deaths and 972,969 total positive cases in the United States.
- Oil prices plunged on Monday, with the American benchmark hurtling toward the $10 a barrel mark, as fears about a global glut in crude continued to weigh on energy markets. But the S&P 500 rose about 1 percent, and European stocks were trading about 2 percent higher after a broadly higher day in Asia.
