State Coronavirus Updates
- Unemployment Benefits
- Many Pennsylvania residents who were not previously eligible for unemployment compensation can now file for benefits through a new state system. The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, part of the federal government’s stimulus package to provide economic relief to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, offers benefits to eligible individuals who are self-employed, independent contractors, gig workers and others who may not qualify for regular unemployment but can no longer work. The state’s new online platform was released today.

- Governor Tom Wolf today announced nearly $16 million in funding for Pennsylvania food banks, which are providing critical assistance to Pennsylvanians during the COVID-19 health crisis. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has received $14.9 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) in Pennsylvania to provide critical support and food to Pennsylvania’s food banks and emergency food assistance network working to feed the hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians. - Governor Tom Wolf today reminded Pennsylvanians that public benefit programs are available to families and individuals who have lost jobs, income and health insurance as a result of the COVID-19 public health emergency. These programs include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Regional Coronavirus Updates
- Allegheny County
- Allegheny County saw a jump of 62 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours. County health department officials said Saturday’s increase — the largest in the last week — was related to batches of test results added to the data as well as additional testing in communal living communities. More than 11,800 people have been tested for the coronavirus in Allegheny County, but that amounts to less than 1% of residents.
- Westmoreland County
- County officials’ hopes to share more details with the public about the locations of Westmoreland’s confirmed coronavirus cases are in limbo. Commissioner Sean Kertes said Friday that the nondisclosure agreement the state department of health is requiring in exchange for the information is a significant roadblock. State officials agreed last week to share locations of confirmed coronavirus cases with county public safety officials in an effort to help first responders. But Westmoreland Director of Public Safety Roland “Bud” Mertz said the stipulations that come along with the nondisclosure agreement would hinder normal operations. As of Friday afternoon, the county hadn’t received that information from the state.
- Airport
- At a time when virtually every commercial airline is slashing flights because of the lack of demand for travel, UPS and FedEx have reached out to inquire about possibly adding service, said Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, which operates Pittsburgh International Airport. “We’re aware that we could be seeing more activity from both of them,” she said. The reason is simple enough: E-commerce has seen a huge surge in demand as millions of people sheltering at home shop for goods and services online.

- Department of Defense
- The Pentagon has extended its freeze on domestic and international movement of troops through June 30 due to the coronavirus crisis, a top personnel official announced today. The new order takes effect on Monday. The freeze was originally set to expire on May 11. Read more.

- According to CNN, as of 2:00pm on Saturday, April 18, 37,625 individuals have died from the coronavirus in the United States.
