State Coronavirus Updates
- Governor Wolf Working to Open Economy
- Pennsylvania officials will work with leaders from five neighboring states to coordinate efforts to reopen businesses that were closed in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Gov. Tom Wolf said Monday. More details below under the Federal/National section.
Regional Coronavirus Updates
- Plasma Program for Treating COVID-19
- Plasma from people who have recovered from the coronavirus could be a tool in helping critically ill patients recover from the virus, and the region’s two largest health care providers are working together to help facilitate those transfusions. Vitalant, previously the Central Blood Bank, is working with UPMC and Allegheny Health Network on this plasma-transfusion pilot program, according a joint news release from the nonprofit health care giants. - As of 12 a.m. today, there are 1,366 new positive cases; 24,199 positive cases now statewide in all 67 counties.
- 1,179 are healthcare workers who tested positive; 1,688 who tested positive are in 215 nursing homes and/or long-term living facilities.
- 2,205 have been hospitalized or 10% of total cases; 665 of those hospitalized require the use of a ventilator or breathing machine.
- As of 12 p.m. today, 44% hospital beds, 38% ICU beds and 70% ventilators are still available.
- 524 deaths are adults who tested positive.
- Social distancing is difficult but it is working. Important not to reopen at this time since we haven’t reached peak. We don’t want to overwhelm our healthcare systems.
- Wolf spoke to Vice President Pence this morning and the federal government is sending N95 masks this week.
- In regards to a question asked about the Westmoreland County coroner’s counts being different than what the state reports, Dr. Levine said she was unaware of the discrepancy and her team will investigate and clarify.
Federal/National Coronavirus Updates
- Governors across six states in the northeast, coordinated by New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D), convened in a public conference call Monday afternoon to discuss a cooperative effort to reopen the region’s economy once the threat from the coronavirus has sufficiently subsided. Other governors participating include Phil Murphy of New Jersey, Ned Lamont of Connecticut, Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania, John C. Carney Jr. of Delaware and Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island. Each state has agreed to name health, economic, and executive point persons to work on the regional plan. The governors did not share a hard timeline for reopening businesses. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said talks will start Tuesday.
