State Coronavirus Updates
- Call Center Job Openings
- Pennsylvanians who are looking for work during the coronavirus pandemic could get a job helping the unemployed. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry is hiring workers to help with the incredible surge in unemployment claims. Temporary full-time positions as intake interviewers for the state’s unemployment call centers are open in Allegheny, Indiana, Erie, Berks, Blair, Dauphin, and Lackawanna counties. The jobs pay from $17.73 to $26.45 an hour. Read more here.

- Allegheny County
- Allegheny County’s total positive cases is now 876. There are 134 hospitalizations and 21 deaths. See additional info here.

- County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today called for an expansion of the state’s emergency declaration to allow the county to send a ballot to every registered voter in Allegheny County so that the June 2, 2020 primary election may be conducted by mail. The action is being taken upon the recommendation of Dr. Debra Bogen, Director of the Allegheny County Health Department. “Holding an in-person election in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic would be, in and of itself, a disaster,” said Fitzgerald. “We are not going to have enough staff to work the election and asking elected and appointed poll workers to work flies in the face of what we’ve been asking everyone in this county to do since mid-March. Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy, but in-person voting would jeopardize this community and potentially disenfranchise voters who would be afraid to come to the polls.
- Westmoreland County
- The Westmoreland County coroner’s office reported one new coronavirus-related death late Saturday night, bringing the countywide total to 12. The state health department continues to report six COVID-19 deaths in Westmoreland County. Coroner Kenneth Bacha says that it is behind the actual numbers and may not be counting all cases. - Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

- The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is hosting two more emergency food distributions Monday and Tuesday. Monday’s drive-thru distribution will take place at the food bank’s Duquesne site. Food will also be distributed on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Alameda Park in Butler. About 575 vehicles will be allowed at that site.

National Coronavirus Updates
- As of 12:00 p.m. on April 13th, there are 22,154 deaths in the country. New Jersey and New York account for more than half of these deaths.
- Vermont and Los Angeles County have extended stay-at-home orders until May 15. Officials in New York, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio have also signaled that their issued stay-at-home orders and closures of non-essential businesses could be in place well into May or June.
