State Coronavirus Updates
- As of 12:00 a.m., April 12, there are 1,178 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 22,833 – about a 5.4% increase in cases from the previous day. There have been a reported 13 new deaths, bringing the statewide total to 507.
Regional Coronavirus Updates
- Allegheny County reports 21 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the county’s total to 857. There are 130 hospitalizations and 19 deaths. See additional info here.
Federal/National Coronavirus Updates
- As of 2:00 p.m., April 12, there are 542,023 cases and 21,489 deaths due to coronavirus in the United States.
- Public health and medical professionals spoke on news shows this morning calling for President Donald Trump to not defund the World Health Organization (WHO). On Friday, it was released that White House aides and President Trump were debating several far-reaching moves to target the WHO in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, including cutting off U.S. funding and attempting to create an alternative institution.
- FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn cautioned that while we need to ramp up testing (both diagnostic and antibody), it’s important to ensure their accuracy. Antibody tests, which detect whether someone has already been exposed to COVID-19 and may have immunity, can be one of the keys to getting the country back on its feet. However, there are antibody tests on the market that haven’t been validated; the FDA has authorized one antibody test thus far.
- The U.S. Senate will meet Monday for a pro forma session. Governors from both parties are calling for more federal aid given to their states. On Thursday, Republicans attempted to pass an additional $250 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program. Democrats are calling for additional money for hospitals and local governments and want to see some of the $250 billion in small business aid being directed to underserved communities. Republican leaders are stating that they’ll only support increases in funding for small businesses and that Democrats should wait to address other issues.
