Regional Coronavirus Updates

  • Port Authority of Allegheny County
    • Beginning Monday, April 13, 2020, Port Authority will limit how many people are permitted on buses and light rail vehicles.
      • No more than 10 riders will be permitted on a 35-foot bus at one time
      • No more than 15 riders will be permitted on a 40-foot bus at one time
      • No more than 25 riders will be permitted on a 60-foot articulated bus or light rail vehicle at one time
  • Hillman Foundation
    • The Henry L. Hillman Foundation announced Friday, April 10 that it was awarding more than $4 million in grants to help organizations that are fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Funding will be distributed across multiple organizations, including public health and human service organizations, basic needs supporting organizations, and gap funding support for minority and women-led businesses or nonprofits.
  • Allegheny County
    • Allegheny County saw its largest increase in deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with six new deaths reported on Friday, April 10, and the number of confirmed cases rose by 29 from Thursday, April 9 to a total of 788, the county said.
  • Westmoreland County
    • Westmoreland County Coroner Ken Bacha states that the county has 11 deaths related to coronavirus as of Friday, April 10. (Please note that the Dept of Health has not confirmed all.)

  • U.S. Senate
    • The Senate failed to approve legislation Thursday that would expand funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which provides loans to small businesses to mitigate the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

 

National Coronavirus Updates

  • According to CNN, as of 12:30 p.m. on Friday April 10, 2020, 17,836 individuals have died from the coronavirus in the United States.
  • National Economy – Virus Throws Millions More Out of Work
    • More than 16 million Americans have lost their jobs amid the outbreak. There is a growing agreement among many economists that the government’s efforts were too small and came too late in the fast-moving pandemic to prevent businesses from abandoning their workers. Federal agencies, working in a prescribed partnership with Wall Street, have proved ill equipped to move money quickly to the places it is needed most.
